Why does the dryer run twice and the laundry room stay hot?

Usually restriction, not a failing appliance. Lint narrows the duct slowly. The motor still runs, heat still builds, but moist air cannot leave. Here the dry climate hides duct restriction longer. Owners report multi-cycle drying, hot laundry rooms and burning smell rather than visible moisture or dripping walls.

Layout decides how the work goes. Short exterior-wall runs in older single-story stock clear quickly from both ends. Long multi-elbow second-floor runs to roof caps in post-1980 tract homes are a different job, with rooftop access and vertical turns. Soffit-routed condo closet runs are tight and shallow. Garage-corner installations where flexible foil or vinyl duct was crushed behind the dryer often need the duct replaced, not just cleaned.

Common findings: foil transition duct replaced-era but still coiled and pinched in tight laundry closets. Roof-cap terminations with screens, bird nesting and dust-caked flappers. Sidewall caps buried behind shrubs or stucco-patched flaps that no longer open. Lint packed at elbows where upstairs runs turn vertical.

Check it yourself. Start a timed cycle, walk outside, find the cap. The flap should swing open and push warm air. If nothing moves, the blockage is downstream of the dryer.

Single-story short runs generally need clearing every 18 to 24 months. Upstairs roof-vented runs, condo closets, pets or heavy loads need annual service.
