Dryer Vent Cleaning FAQ — San Diego, CA

Common questions from homeowners in San Diego and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.

How often should a dryer vent in San Diego actually get cleared out?

Once a year covers most households. Bump that to every six or eight months if you run four or more loads a week, dry pet bedding, or have a family of five pushing laundry through daily. The marine layer mornings from May through August keep indoor air damp, and damp lint packs tighter against duct walls than dry lint does. Short runs in a downtown condo can sometimes stretch past a year; long runs through a two-story tract house in Mira Mesa usually cannot.

Which warning signs point to a clogged vent?

The clearest one is a load that needs two cycles when it used to need one. Watch for a dryer cabinet that is hot to the touch, a laundry room that feels like a sauna after a cycle, and clothes that come out damp at the center of the bundle. Go outside and put your hand near the exterior hood while the dryer runs. Weak airflow, or a flapper that barely lifts, means the duct is loaded.

Walk me through the job from the moment you arrive.

We start at the exterior hood and the back of the dryer so we know the length, the material, and how many bends we are dealing with. Then we pull the dryer forward, disconnect the transition hose, and run a rotating brush on flexible rod through the full duct while a vacuum holds suction at one end. Lint gets captured, not blown into the room. We reconnect, check the hood flapper opens freely, run the dryer, and measure airflow at the outlet before we leave. If the transition hose is crushed or torn, we show you and replace it.

How much of my day does this take?

Most single-family jobs wrap in forty-five minutes to about ninety. A short side-wall run in a 1950s Clairemont ranch is quick. A second-floor laundry in an inland tract home that exits through the roof takes longer, because we work both ends and sometimes set up a ladder. Nests, crushed sections, or a duct that was never cleaned since the house was built will add time, and we tell you that before we start rather than after.

Why does one house cost more than the one next door?

Length and access drive it. A ground-floor run that punches straight through a stucco wall is the simplest version of this job. A roof termination, a duct that snakes through a ceiling cavity to reach the far side of a two-story, or an interior-wall condo stack all take more setup and more time on the rods. Elbows matter too, since every ninety-degree turn is a spot lint grabs. Removing a packed nest, replacing a damaged transition hose, or installing a proper hood is separate work we price after we see it. The estimate is free and nothing starts until you approve the number.

How do I know the fault is the duct and not the machine itself?

Try one test load with the transition hose pulled off the wall and the dryer venting into the room. Watch it for a few minutes only. If that load dries normally, the machine is fine and the duct is the problem. If it still runs long and the clothes stay cool, you are looking at a heating element, a thermal fuse, or a bad sensor, and you need an appliance tech. We tell you straight when the issue is the dryer, because cleaning a clear duct will not fix it.

Does it matter whether the duct is rigid metal or flexible?

It matters a lot. Rigid metal has smooth walls, holds its shape, and lint moves through it. Flexible foil and plastic accordion duct has ridges that catch lint on every inch, and it crushes the moment the dryer gets pushed back against the wall. We find the old foil type often in 1920s-40s bungalows near downtown and North Park where laundry was added into a closet or a porch long after the house was built. Our recommendation is rigid metal for the concealed run and a short UL-listed metal transition behind the dryer.

What happens if there is a bird or rodent nest inside the line?

We remove it. House finches and sparrows get into hoods with missing or broken flappers, and roof terminations near canyons and foothills are the usual targets. The nest comes out, the duct gets brushed clean of the droppings and debris behind it, and we sanitize the section. Then we fit a hood with a working damper and a proper guard so the next bird cannot get a foothold. Skipping the hood replacement just invites the same visitor back next season.

My duct run is long. Can anything be done about it?

Sometimes yes. The first thing we look for is a shorter path to an exterior wall, which often exists in older homes where the laundry was relocated and the original run was left in place. When rerouting is not practical, an inline booster fan wired to run with the dryer can recover the airflow. We also count elbows, because removing two tight turns can do as much as shortening the run by several feet. We will tell you honestly if the run is fine as built and just needed cleaning.

Do you have openings today, and where do you travel?

Same-day slots are usually available, and mornings tend to have the most room. We cover San Diego across coastal Southern California, from the Pacific shoreline to the inland mesas. That means downtown and North Park, Clairemont, Serra Mesa, Mira Mesa, the South Bay, the inland and north two-story tract and townhome neighborhoods, and the post-2000 condo and mixed-use buildings along the trolley corridors. Fall Santa Ana wind events push desert dust into hoods and vents, so call early in that stretch if you want a specific window.
